STEM Education in Preparatory Years: Impact on Logic, Reasoning, and Troubleshooting Abilities

Preparatory years represent a critical period in which children begin to consolidate foundational concepts and develop higher-order thinking habits that shape later academic performance. STEM education, which integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, offers a strong framework for cultivating logic, reasoning, and troubleshooting abilities through inquiry, experimentation, and problem-based learning. Research indicates that integrated STEM problem solving helps learners move between practical inquiry and disciplinary reasoning, allowing them to connect school knowledge with everyday experience in more meaningful ways. Studies of problem-based STEM education with middle school students also report significant gains in critical thinking tendencies and problem-solving perceptions, along with qualitative improvements in cognitive maturity, innovativeness, and collaborative learning. This paper examines the importance of STEM education in the preparatory stage, analyzes its contribution to logic and reasoning development, and discusses how troubleshooting skills can be strengthened through interdisciplinary classroom experiences. It argues that STEM learning is most effective when instruction is activity-oriented, conceptually scaffolded, and connected to authentic problems that require reflection and revision.
