Abstract

Gamification has emerged as an innovative pedagogical strategy in modern education, particularly in second language learning contexts. In Kerala, where English is taught as a second language (ESL), learners often face challenges in achieving communicative competence despite high literacy rates. Gamification, which involves integrating game elements such as points, rewards, challenges, and levels into non-game contexts, offers a promising way to enhance student engagement and motivation. This paper examines the concept of gamification, its theoretical foundations, and its relevance to English language teaching in classrooms in Kerala. Drawing on recent research (2020–2025), the paper highlights the benefits of gamification in improving language skills, increasing participation, and reducing learner anxiety. It also discusses practical implementation strategies, challenges faced by teachers, and recommendations for effective use. The study concludes that gamification, when applied thoughtfully, can transform traditional ESL classrooms into dynamic, interactive, and learner-centred environments.
