Abstract

The rapid growth of smartphone technology has significantly transformed the lifestyle, communication patterns, and learning behaviours of adolescents worldwide. While mobile phones provide educational and social benefits, excessive usage has increasingly been associated with various psychological and behavioural problems, particularly attention deficit symptoms among adolescents. The present meta-analytic study aims to examine the overall relationship between excessive mobile phone usage and attention deficit symptoms in adolescent students by synthesizing findings from previously published empirical studies. A systematic review of relevant literature published between 2010 and 2025 was conducted using major academic databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Studies included in the analysis focused on adolescents aged 10–19 years and investigated the association between mobile phone use, smartphone addiction, screen time, or problematic mobile phone behaviour and attention-related difficulties such as inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Standard meta-analytic procedures were employed to calculate pooled effect sizes and assess heterogeneity among studies. The findings revealed a significant positive association between excessive mobile phone usage and attention deficit symptoms among adolescents. Higher levels of smartphone dependency and prolonged screen exposure were consistently linked with reduced concentration, impaired academic performance, shorter attention span, and increased behavioural distractions. The analysis also indicated that social media overuse, nighttime phone usage and gaming activities intensified attention-related problems. Despite variations across cultural settings and study designs, the overall evidence supported the conclusion that excessive mobile phone use is a substantial risk factor for attention difficulties among adolescents. The study highlights the urgent need for parents, educators, mental health professionals, and policymakers to promote responsible mobile phone usage and digital well-being among adolescents. Awareness programs, digital literacy education, and healthy screen-time management strategies are recommended to minimize the adverse cognitive and behavioural effects associated with excessive smartphone use. Future research should focus on longitudinal investigations to better understand causal relationships and intervention effectiveness.
