Abstract

Play is recognised across developmental psychology and education research as a primary vehicle through which young children build cognitive, social, emotional, and physical competencies. Within elementary education, the distinction between outdoor and indoor play carries practical significance for school design, timetabling, and pedagogical philosophy, yet the two forms are rarely compared systematically. This paper reviews the evidence on outdoor and indoor play in children aged five to twelve, examining how each setting shapes different domains of development and what the comparative research tells us about when each context is most valuable. Drawing on developmental psychology, physical education research, and classroom-based studies from India and internationally (2005–2025), the paper finds that outdoor play produces stronger gains in gross motor skill, risk tolerance, peer negotiation, and environmental awareness, while well-designed indoor play environments more reliably support language development, symbolic reasoning, and teacher-guided learning goals. The two are not substitutes but complements: children who experience both structured indoor play and open-ended outdoor play show more integrated developmental profiles than those restricted to either alone. Implications for curriculum design under India's National Education Policy 2020, Foundational Stage framework, and school infrastructure planning are discussed.
