Teacher education is being transformed by technological advancement, policy reforms, globalization, and evolving learner expectations. Innovation is now essential for preparing educators to meet the demands of modern classrooms. This paper examines recent developments in teacher preparation, including digital pedagogy, artificial intelligence (AI), competency-based learning, blended models, inclusive education, and continuous professional development (CPD). It also reviews the impact of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and global initiatives from UNESCO and the OECD. These frameworks provide context for the discussion.
Despite global efforts to integrate technology, interdisciplinary approaches, and research-based methods, significant challenges persist. The digital divide, outdated infrastructure, and teacher shortages hinder progress. This paper contends that successful innovation in teacher education must be learner-centred, ethically grounded, evidence-based, and sustainable to ensure quality and equity. The following sections outline emerging trends, underlying causes, key innovations, and ongoing challenges in modernising teacher education.
